EMDR Trauma Therapy

(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

Survivors of trauma often express feeling there are so many layers  of pain and emotions to get through before feeling relief.  EMDR can help.  Another way to think of EMDR is as a trauma cleansing.

Back in 2001 during a conversation with one of my mentors trauma was defined to me in the simplest of terms: “Anything that happened to you that you did not expect to happen is a trauma.”  EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.  These disturbing life experiences are stored in our brain.  When we “bump” into these experiences- either through a trigger, an emotion, or a flashback, we often get stuck in the pain from the unresolved trauma.  This really uncomfortable and almost debilitating  space  often is a negative self-belief about ourselves. It is these strong negative beliefs that often impact our life in many negative ways…. thus, the need for a ” cleansing.”

It has been my experience that individuals who have utilized EMDR as part of their treatment towards healing and growth explain it as a process very opposite of trauma.  Rather than it feeling as if something that happened to them, they feel more in control and empowered, a sense of freedom.  The process of EMDR also lends to individuals feeling empowered.  As Brene Brown says, “We share with people who’ve earned the right to hear our story.”  At times, we may not be ready to tell or even talk about our story.  However, the story still hurts.  EMDR allows you to process and move through the pain without having to tell the entire story.  I find this brings tremendous comfort.   Now I have choices!  Clients can also choose to stop the process at any time.  Another self-choice.
